Guidelines for Editing your Article

  1. General Format
  • Font: Times New Roman, size 12.
  • Line spacing: 1.5.
  • Alignment: Left.
  • Indentation: 1.25 cm, except for the first line of each section.
  • Margins: Standard (top and bottom: 2.5 cm; left and right: 3 cm).
  • Paragraph spacing: Do not leave a blank line between paragraphs.
  • Page number: Times New Roman, size 11.
  1. Section Division
  • Although this is at the author’s discretion, it is recommended that each section be identified with subtitles. These should be in bold, using the same font size as the main text. The use of uppercase and lowercase letters should follow general writing conventions.
  • If subsections are used under each subtitle, they should appear in italics (without bold).
  1. References and Citations
  • Footnotes should be written in Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced, and justified.
  • References must always include page numbers, except in general references to an entire work or when mentioning a book or article within a literature review or historiographical discussion.
  • Footnotes should preferably be inserted at the end of the sentence. If the note refers to specific information within the sentence, it may appear where most relevant.
  • When citing a work for the first time, include the complete citation (author, title, place of publication, publisher, year, and page numbers). Subsequent citations of the same work should use the abbreviated form.

Example of full citation (first occurrence):Luis Miguel Glave, De Rosa y espinas. Economía, sociedad y mentalidades andinas, siglo XVII (Lima: Instituto de Estudios Peruanos; Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, 1998), 185–186.

Abbreviated citation (subsequent occurrences):
Glave, De Rosa y espinas, 185–186.

Direct Quotations

  • When using direct quotations, the following guidelines should be followed:
  • Quotations under 5 lines should be included within the paragraph and enclosed in double quotation marks (“”).
  • If the quotation exceeds 5 lines, introduce it with a colon (:).
  • Quotations longer than 5 lines should be formatted as block quotes, written in Times New Roman 12, single-spaced, justified, and indented 1.25 cm from the left. Block quotes should not be enclosed in quotation marks.
  • For a quotation within another quotation, use single quotation marks (‘’).

Archival Manuscript Citations

  • When citing an archival manuscript, include the author’s name, document title, place, date, archive, sections and subsections (if applicable), and folio or page number at the end. If the author cannot be identified, begin with the document title.

Example:
“Solicitud de Jorge López,” Cartagena, 1822, AGN, R, PS, leg. 3, doc. 20, ff. 338 r.–342 v.

  1. Bibliography
  • The bibliography must be listed alphabetically (not chronologically) at the end of the text.
  • It should be written in Times New Roman 12, single-spaced, with one blank line between entries.

Example:
Zuidema, Tom. El sistema de ceques del Cuzco. Lima: Fondo Editorial de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 1995.

Guidelines for Book Reviews

Historia y Cultura accepts reviews of recent books and re-editions of works of historiographical importance. Reviews should be written in Times New Roman 12, with 1.5 line spacing. Authors are encouraged to address the following aspects of the reviewed work:

  • What are the author’s objectives? Are they clearly defined and well-argued?
  • What is the book’s contribution to debates in its research field?
  • Does it present a solid foundation of documentary and bibliographic evidence? Is the methodology clear?
  • What is the historiographical importance of the book?
  • Is the writing style and language appropriate? Does the book’s structure and organization facilitate reading?
  • What type of audience would find this research useful?

Please avoid simply summarizing the book without analyzing its content. Also, avoid using footnotes.

If directly quoting the text, indicate the page as follows:

“The emergence of a culture of piety occurred as a direct effect of the Counter-Reformation” (p. 254).

The review should begin with the bibliographic information found on the book’s copyright page.
