The Debate over the Fiscal Note Crisis in the Postwar Period with Chile

Abstract

During the post-war years with Chile, projects emerged aimed at resolving the fiscal bill crisis. The central ideas of the debate generated to avoid the collapse of paper money were raised by San Marcos professors (lawyers and economists). These legal and financial discussions, held in university classrooms by professors and government officials, addressed the causes and consequences of monetary depreciation. The press and publications of the time recorded the exchange of opinions that occurred while the repudiation of the bill impoverished the fiscal coffers, capital and salaries and generated numerous legal disputes. The objective of this article is to highlight the role played by the San Marcos academy in the search for economic proposals that harmonize the interests of the State, merchants and the ticket-holding public, in the midst of the general claim for compensation for the damages caused by the bankruptcy of the nineteenth-century monetary system.
